What started as an addition to my exercise regimen has become so much more! After raising two boys and developing a career in System and Software Engineering over the past 28 years, I began to focus on my health which had previously been low on the priority list. As an aging woman, I considered myself in “training for retirement” with confidence that genetics isn’t all that matters. Although I was walking and lifting weights with the goal of preserving my bone mass, I was entertaining the idea of giving yoga a try. Yoga is often recommended for improving flexibility and balance as we age. Well, knowing that losing balance and flexibility contributes to falls (coupled with a fear of someday becoming one of those ladies on TV that falls and can’t get back up) I found the courage to sign up for yoga!
I began an Introduction to Yoga Series with Holley Porter Wright four years ago. Definitely one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself and the ones I love. I’ve discovered that being healthy is so much more than exercising and eating well. It’s about addressing our needs physically, mentally and spiritually. Your spirit is the essence of who you are and often we lose touch with that in our busy lives. Yoga provides the tools for that exploration and reconnection with your essential self.
Over the past years, yoga has become seamlessly integrated into my life and I am forever changed for the better. There isn’t an exact time or event that I can pin point but rather a gradual change in the way I view my body, my spirit and the world around me. I often joke with my friends about “peeling the onion”. There are many layers. I’m really enjoying discovering more about connecting with my body and gaining the confidence to acknowledge what the layers underneath reveal. Yes, sometimes “peeling the onion” brings tears but the clarity and peace that ensues is totally worth it!
My life experiences coupled with this process of personal enlightenment led me to Holistic Health Coaching. After years of enjoying reading about health and nutrition, I pursued a certification through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition whose principles are very much in line with my own beliefs and yoga practice.
My credentials include certification as a Health Coach through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition sanctioned by the New York State Education Department. I am also a board certified Holistic Health Practitioner through the American Association of Drugless Practitioners. The journey continues as I pursue my 200 hour Yoga Alliance Certification while studying in the Subtle Yoga Teacher Training Program. I also plan to complete my Personal Training Certification in 2015 and explore master degree programs in counseling.
My Approach and Services
As I said before, what started as an addition to my exercise regimen has become so much more! Now that I’m 50 something years young, I no longer see my future as retirement but rather opportunities to explore and share with others. I’m pursuing my education and training to provide my clients with a multi-faceted integrative approach to wellness. It is my belief that we need to expand “healthy” to mean more than being free from disease or symptoms. Being alive and living a vibrant life are two very different things. We must also consider expanding beyond the typical notion of “health” and understand that nutrition is only one of many equally important factors that contribute to happiness and well-being.
Through training, health coaching and my yoga practice, I’m learning how to take better care of myself on all levels. It’s an exciting lifetime learning experience as we are beautiful unique dynamic beings. Please let me know if you’d like to be on this journey with me. I’d be honored to partner with you as we move toward improved health and happiness. My services currently include Health Coaching and Yoga Instruction.
